Professional powder coating from Winning Colors is the superior alternative to conventional paints and sealing coats. This dry finishing process offers nearly infinite color and texture options with precise application and longer-lasting protection than paint. More companies are switching to powder coating for machinery, industrial hardware, consumer goods, and high-performance vehicles. In fact, powder coating accounts for over 15% of the industrial finishing market because of its superior durability, low environmental impact, and speed. Winning Colors has been providing businesses with precision powder coating services since 2004. Learn more about the advantages of powder coating and our process.

What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a dry finish process in which colored, powderized polymer or plastic material is sprayed on the surface of an item. The sprayer creates an electrostatic charge, which causes the powder particles to bond permanently to the surface. After spraying, heat is applied to fix each particle in place. The result is a durable coating with no ripping, tearing, or bubbling, which can happen with traditional paint coats.

Powder coating is a cost-effective technique that is compatible with a wide range of workpiece substrates, from metal to plastic to fiberglass. The application process ensures the powder covers every nook and cranny of intricate three-dimensional components. It is also highly versatile, with special formulations in different colors, glossiness levels, and protective characteristics for any application that needs durable coatings.

Advantages of Powder Coating

Powder coating offers several benefits, both during the manufacturing and finishing process and throughout the lifespan of the product. Key advantages include:

  • Chemical and corrosion resistance. Powder coat formulas can incorporate ingredients that withstand corrosion or exposure to specific chemicals for a tailored, long-lasting coating.
  • Compatible with complex shapes. Items with intricate forms can be difficult to coat evenly with paint, even when sprayers are used; however, powder coating materials can reach every crevice for smooth, complete, and uniform coverage.
  • Cost-effective production. Professional technicians can quickly apply powder coats and cure the workpieces in ovens. This process does not require the same lengthy application and drying processes of liquid coats. Technicians can also collect and reuse excess powder for subsequent pieces, which saves on materials and reduces waste. Powder coating offers a 98% materialization rate and can form coats of two to four mils thick in one application, streamlining product completion.
  • Durability. Once cured, powder coatings are resilient. Because the material adheres to the workpiece particle by particle, it’s not vulnerable to chipping, scratching, or bubbling. Powder-coated goods can better withstand heavy-duty usage and general wear and tear than painted items.
  • Environmental friendliness. Excess powder can be reused, which reduces material waste and environmental impact. Dry powders also don’t emit VOCs, making them a safer and more eco-friendly coatings option compared to liquid paints.
  • Versatility. Powder coats adhere to a wide range of surface materials, including metals and non-metals like wood composites. They are also available in dozens of different colors, textures, and metallic finish options, and they can be formulated for specific protective capabilities.

Industries and Applications

Winning Colors serves customers in many industries with comprehensive powder coating services. We can powder coat machined components, equipment hardware, custom goods, metal stampings, and more for use in these and other industries:

  • Automotive.
  • Construction.
  • Consumer goods.

Our Powder Coating Process

Professional power coating is an efficient solution for coating equipment, parts, and components for added durability and aesthetics. At Winning Colors, we follow a multi-stage process to prepare, coat, and complete every workpiece so it has a solid, long-lasting coating with no imperfections or gaps.

  • Cleaning. We clean the parts to remove trace contaminants like dirt and dust, grease, oil, soil, rust and scale, and any chemical remainders from initial production. Each piece is cleaned, washed, and dried thoroughly to ensure optimal powder adherence.
  • Pretreating. Pretreating steel and aluminum pieces with an iron phosphate coating improves rust resistance.
  • Sealant. Applying this sealant removes any lingering contaminants and corrects the pH of the product surface so the powder sticks.
  • Coating. Technicians apply an even layer of positively charged powders to the negatively charged workpiece with a spray gun. The powder sticks evenly to the surface, and any excess falls away for recollection.
  • Curing. The coated piece is cured at temperatures of 450°F or higher to melt the powder into a smooth, permanent finish.
